Love Thy Neighbor is a Commandment not a Suggestion

Unconditional love

Accepting the Lord and the promise of Heaven is an incredible demonstration of unconditional love from God. It’s a gift freely given, with no strings attached, solely based on God’s love. However, within the Christian faith, this acceptance is just the beginning of the relationship.

Beyond the act of acceptance lies a deeper calling for those who choose to follow Jesus. As believers, we’re called to emulate Jesus in our daily lives and interactions. This means living a life characterized by love and compassion.

Not a suggestion

Look to the Gospel of Mark (12:28-31, NLT), which underscores the centrality of love in Christianity. It’s written in red. Spoken by Jesus. Jesus was in Israel. Jesus was asked; “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

It’s essential to recognize that these directives are not suggestions, they are commandments. They carry the weight of utmost importance in Christian life and practice. This should guide believers towards a life of purpose and meaning. Urging believers to live like Jesus.

Be a beacon

As a kid, I loved Vacation Bible School. Catchy songs often served as melodic metaphors. I love a catchy tune. Among them, the refrain of “Shine for Jesus” resonated deeply with me;

“Shine for Jesus, shine your light, Be a beacon in the darkest night. Light the fire, burn so bright, Shine your light for Jesus.”

This song is metaphorical brilliance. It evokes illumination. It’s a lyrical reminder of our capacity to be a light, radiating positivity, kindness, and love. It’s like Jesus. Living like Jesus.

Live like Jesus

So, by living like Jesus, we live a life illuminated by love. By loving God and loving others like Jesus did, we align ourselves with His words. We contribute to the collective betterment of humanity.

The Gospel of Mark serves as a beautiful reminder – the Christian faith is grounded in love. It not just about personal salvation. As believers we are called to play an active role in building a more compassionate and loving world. By living lives characterized by love and compassion, believers serve as beacons of hope, reflecting the love of God to all those they encounter.

P.s. I was excited to use the word “centrality” in this post. I think it’s the first time I’ve ever expressed something with that particular word. It was nice.
